Maritime customs support through Aberdeen
GEIM supports RoRo freight, containerised cargo, lift-on lift-off movements, bulk, break-bulk and project cargo through Aberdeen’s maritime facilities. The process depends on the actual service, cargo location and customs status. A booking involving an intermediate port or onward journey needs to be assessed as a complete movement.
Our support includes checking shipment information, preparing the appropriate UK declarations, handling applicable inventory links and coordinating the customs steps with the parties moving the goods. Transport arrangements, commercial cargo release and collection coordination can be included in the agreed service.
Import customs clearance through Aberdeen
For goods arriving from outside the UK, GEIM checks whether the goods require UK import declarations and which procedure applies. A full declaration is one option; authorised simplified procedures, special procedures or eligible oral or by-conduct declarations may apply to particular goods. Relief depends on the goods and evidence, rather than the port name alone.
At an inventory-linked location, the cargo record and customs declaration must match. The party controlling the cargo record supplies or confirms the inventory reference; we check the information required for the declaration. Other authorised arrangements follow their own arrival and release process.
Arrival and presentation tell customs that the goods are available for checks. GEIM agrees who will complete those notifications, deals with declaration queries within the agreed service and checks the resulting customs status. Duty, import VAT and any payment or security arrangements must be addressed before release where required. Eligible postponed import VAT accounting needs the importer’s written instructions.
Goods arriving under transit must reach the declared customs destination and have that movement ended correctly. They may then need an import declaration or another customs procedure before they can be used or delivered.
Export customs clearance from Aberdeen
GEIM prepares and submits UK export declarations and re-export declarations where required. We check the goods, destination, licences, previous procedure and booked departure arrangements, including whether the declaration must be pre-lodged or handled under an applicable arrived process.
After submission, the goods must be presented as required and any customs checks completed. Customs permission to progress must be in place before loading or departure where required. A declaration reference on its own does not authorise the goods to leave.
We coordinate the UK customs steps and check export departure confirmation against the declaration. The carrier, loader or other responsible party must send the relevant departure information. Missing or inconsistent departure evidence needs investigation; booking confirmation alone does not show that an export declaration has been completed.
Destination-country import clearance is a separate process. GEIM can coordinate the overseas customs requirements under the agreed service. UK export permission does not mean that the goods have been released in the destination country.
Safety and security and movement references
An Entry Summary Declaration, or ENS, supplies advance safety and security information for goods entering Great Britain where required. It is separate from the import customs declaration. GEIM can submit S&S GB declarations with the responsible carrier’s agreement; the carrier retains its legal responsibility for ensuring filing.
For exports, safety and security data may be included in the export declaration. A separate Exit Summary Declaration, or EXS, is needed in some cases unless an exemption applies. For an outward or onward journey, the actual first foreign entry point determines the relevant security system, including ICS2 where applicable. GEIM coordinates the agreed destination requirements.
Booking references, bills of lading, manifest records, inventory references, customs declaration references, transit references and GMRs serve different purposes. Give each reference its correct label. A customs exemption does not necessarily remove a separate carrier or movement-record requirement, including for empty equipment, reusable packaging or grouped consignments.
Offshore and vessel movements
Goods moving to or from the UK Continental Shelf
Offshore equipment and supplies need a check of the actual location, purpose and customs status. Goods moving between Great Britain and installations on the UK Continental Shelf beyond UK territorial waters are treated as imports or exports. Movements wholly within UK territorial waters have a different treatment.
GEIM supports offshore declarations and reporting. Eligible low-risk goods may use the UK Continental Shelf declaration-by-conduct process, which combines loading or unloading with the required report. The report is due at least one hour before import arrival or export departure. Controlled goods, excise goods and certain special-procedure movements need a different process. An inventory record or customs clearance request may still be needed at the booked location.
Vessel supplies and returning equipment
Stores or spares intended for use on a vessel must be distinguished from goods carried for use on an offshore installation. Equipment returning unused, coming ashore for repair or moving after processing must be assessed on its own facts. GEIM checks the intended use and return history so the appropriate procedure and supporting evidence can be agreed.
Domestic freight and onward journeys
Freight between Aberdeen and the Northern Isles is generally a domestic Great Britain movement. Goods already in free circulation on a wholly domestic journey do not automatically need an international import or export declaration. Cargo manifests, status evidence and other movement records can still apply.
Tell GEIM if the goods are under transit, customs warehousing or another duty-suspension procedure, or if the itinerary includes a foreign port. Those details can change the requirements. An offshore destination also needs its own location and status check.
Transit temporary goods and personal effects
T1 and T2 transit support
GEIM supports transit declarations, guarantee arrangements and discharge monitoring. T1 and T2 relate to customs status; they are not interchangeable documents for any sea movement. We check the route, declared destination and relevant customs offices or authorised premises before the movement starts.
The goods need customs release to start transit and must be presented at the required points on the journey. Arrival at a customer’s address is not proof of discharge. The movement must be ended at its declared customs destination and discharge checked before the guarantee position can be resolved.
Temporary movements repairs and returns
GEIM supports eligible Temporary Admission, ATA/eATA carnet movements, Returned Goods Relief and inward or outward processing. The right procedure depends on ownership, purpose, intended use, time abroad and whether the goods will be repaired or changed. A carnet is not required for every temporary movement.
Carnet goods and documents must be presented for the required customs endorsements or digital validation. Check the UK and destination arrangements separately. Returned Goods Relief needs evidence of the earlier export and qualifying return; relief from import VAT has its own conditions, including the same exporter and importer.
Household goods and personal belongings
GEIM handles personal-effects freight through Aberdeen, including Transfer of Residence applications and related entries where needed. Professionally transported household goods can follow a different process from belongings carried personally. Send an inventory, transport details and any relief approval already obtained. Eligibility and the declaration method must be checked before claiming relief.
Controlled cargo and entry requirements
Contact GEIM before booking restricted or regulated cargo. Food, animal products, plants, excise goods, controlled equipment, chemicals and waste may need additional permissions or records. Customs-office status and permission to carry dangerous goods do not establish sanitary or phytosanitary approval.
Aberdeen’s plant inspection listing does not confer animal-products approval. The correct commodity, direction, origin and approved inspection route must be checked. Fish landed directly by a fishing vessel follows different rules from fish transported as cargo. GEIM will assess the enquiry and agree the available support before the goods move.
What to send GEIM
Start with the information you have. You can make an initial enquiry before you have an EORI number, declaration, inventory reference, bill of lading, GMR, transit MRN or carnet reference.
- A clear description of the goods, quantities, packaging, value and origin, with an invoice and packing list if available.
- The full journey, actual loading and discharge ports, any intermediate stops, and the intended arrival or departure date.
- The cargo type and handling arrangements, plus booking, transport or manifest details already supplied.
- Importer or exporter details, relevant EORI and VAT information when available, and authority for GEIM to act before declarations are submitted.
- Any licences, certificates, relief approvals or previous customs records relevant to controlled goods, transit, temporary use, repairs or returns.
- For offshore or vessel movements, the vessel or installation location, intended use, goods status and whether the goods are returning.
GEIM will identify the further information needed for the agreed work. The importer or exporter must provide accurate information and instructions. The carrier, haulier and party controlling the goods must complete their own booking, presentation, status and movement responsibilities.

Frequently asked questions
The fee depends on the goods, declaration items, procedure and support required. Send GEIM the shipment details for a quote. Customs service fees are separate from duty, VAT and any inspection, storage, cargo-handling or transport charges.
There is no single release or collection time for every shipment. Correct preparation helps, but actual arrival, customs checks, queries, payment arrangements and cargo availability affect the result. GEIM explains the outstanding steps; declaration preparation does not guarantee release, loading or a sailing.
Send a goods description, route and expected movement date, with an invoice, packing list or transport document if available. You can enquire before operational references are issued. GEIM will explain the documents and authority needed before declarations can be submitted.
A GMR is not a blanket requirement for every Aberdeen shipment. The official Aberdeen GVMS listing concerns a specific digital office-of-transit arrangement. An applicable transit movement or another journey leg may need a GMR. GEIM checks the actual service and complete route.
Customs release is one step. Any required inventory release, commercial cargo release, other regulatory checks, cargo availability and collection authority must also be resolved. The haulier must follow the agreed booking and access arrangements. GEIM can coordinate these steps within the agreed service.
Goods in free circulation on an ordinary Aberdeen to Northern Isles journey do not automatically need an international declaration. Manifests and status records can still apply. A foreign call, transit movement, duty-suspension procedure or offshore destination needs a separate assessment.
No. The location, goods status, purpose and previous movement determine the treatment. Eligible UK Continental Shelf movements may use declaration by conduct with reporting; other goods need different declarations. Vessel stores and equipment intended for installations must be distinguished. Relief must be supported by evidence.
No. The ENS supplies advance safety and security information separately from the import customs declaration. GEIM can submit S&S GB filings with the carrier’s agreement. The carrier remains legally responsible for ensuring submission. The booked route and cargo determine the deadline and any exemption.
Yes. GEIM supports eligible temporary movements, carnet arrangements, repairs and returns. Tell us the purpose, ownership, intended use and return date. We check the appropriate procedure and evidence. Customs-duty relief and import-VAT relief have separate conditions; a carnet is not always needed.
Yes. GEIM supports personal-effects freight, Transfer of Residence applications and related declarations where applicable. Send an inventory and the transport details. Relief depends on eligibility. Personally carried belongings and professionally transported household goods can have different declaration requirements.
