The customer and the challenge
A UK transport company needed customs support for late night crossings. Its customers included manufacturers and private individuals, and delivery arrangements sometimes depended on warehouses being available around midnight. Taking goods directly from the crossing to the delivery point helped avoid storage charges.
One movement involved a 24 tonne truck carrying mixed goods under different commodity codes. The load included football items for a professional football team and goods for a global gym business. The customer and brands remain anonymous.
At 11pm, the driver was stuck. A communication problem meant that an import declaration covered only part of the load, while the remaining goods had not been declared. A Goods Movement Reference, or GMR, was also missing.
