GEIM — Harwich and Hook of Holland road freight

Harwich–Hook of Holland
Road Freight

The North Sea route for the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Scandinavia and Central Europe, with the customs clearance handled by the same team

Hook of Holland to Harwich takes a trailer from the Rotterdam area to the East of England overnight, with the driver rested and the goods cleared before the vessel docks. We book the haulage and the sailing and prepare the declarations and GMR, so the vehicle rolls off at Harwich and straight onto the A120.

Road Freight via Harwich, Customs Included

Harwich International is the UK's main North Sea ro-ro gateway. Stena Line sails from Hook of Holland twice a day, and unaccompanied trailer and container services run into Harwich and Immingham from Rotterdam Vlaardingen and Europoort. For loads from the Netherlands, northern Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Poland and Scandinavia it is usually shorter, cheaper and less congested than driving round to Calais.

GEIM arranges the vehicle or the unaccompanied trailer, books the sailing and clears the goods. The UK import declaration, the EU export declaration and the Goods Movement Reference are prepared alongside the booking by the same team that handles the haulage, so there is no handover to a separate customs broker and nothing for Border Force to hold at Harwich.

We also run the route in reverse for UK exports to the Netherlands and beyond, and we quote the Rotterdam Vlaardingen to Immingham and Hull to Hook of Holland crossings for loads heading to the North of England and Scotland.

Accompanied or Unaccompanied?

On the North Sea you have a choice that does not exist at Calais.

Accompanied freight means the driver travels with the trailer on the Stena Line ferry from Hook of Holland, a crossing of around seven hours by day or overnight, and drives on at Harwich. The driver's rest is taken on board, so the trailer can be at a Midlands or London delivery address first thing the next morning.

Unaccompanied freight means the trailer or container is dropped at the terminal in the Netherlands, shipped without a driver, and collected by a UK haulier at Harwich or Immingham. It is cheaper, it is not tied to driver hours, and it suits regular flows and anything that is not time-critical.

We quote both where it makes sense. Either way, the customs work is done before the trailer is loaded, and the GMR is linked to the sailing so there is no delay at the UK end.

How a Harwich–Hook of Holland Booking Works

From enquiry to proof of delivery, the process is built to get the trailer across the North Sea and off the quay at Harwich without a stop it does not need.

Here is how we manage a North Sea road freight booking:

  1. Tell us about the load

Collection address in Europe, UK delivery address, cargo type, pallet count or dimensions, weight and timings. We aim to respond within 30 minutes, 24/7.

  2. Route and quote

We compare accompanied and unaccompanied options, Harwich against Immingham or Hull, and full load against groupage, with the haulage, sailing and customs costs broken out.

  3. Booking and documentation

We book the haulier and the sailing and prepare the CMR note and commercial paperwork.

  4. Cleared before loading

The UK import declaration, EU export declaration and GMR are raised and checked before the trailer reaches Hook of Holland, so it is not refused at the terminal gate.

  5. Tracked across the North Sea

We monitor the sailing and the collection at Harwich, and deal directly with the haulier, Stena Line or Border Force if anything changes.

  6. Delivered and closed off

Proof of delivery, duty and VAT records and all shipment documentation provided for your records.

Time-critical load or a change mid-route? The same 24/7 team that clears our customs work runs our road freight, so you can reach us day or night, including public holidays.

Frequently asked questions

For loads from the Netherlands, northern Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Poland and Scandinavia, Hook of Holland is usually closer to the collection point than Calais, the sailing replaces several hours of driving and the driver takes their rest on board. For southern Europe and most of France the short straits via Dover or Folkestone are still faster. We recommend the crossing that fits the collection point, the deadline and the budget.

Around seven hours. Stena Line runs a daytime and an overnight sailing in each direction. Door to door, a load from the Rotterdam area is typically delivered in the UK the next morning, and from Germany or Poland in one to two days.

Accompanied freight travels with its driver on the ferry and drives straight on at Harwich. Unaccompanied freight is a trailer or container shipped without a driver and collected at the UK port by a separate haulier. Unaccompanied is cheaper and not tied to driver hours; accompanied is faster door to door and gives one driver responsibility for the load throughout.

Yes. We arrange exports from the UK to the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Norway and the rest of Europe on the same routes in reverse, including the export and import formalities on both sides.

The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Norway, Sweden and anywhere else where driving to Hook of Holland or Rotterdam is shorter than driving to Calais. For France, Spain and Switzerland we would normally recommend Dover–Calais or Folkestone instead.

We aim to respond to every enquiry within 30 minutes, 24/7, including public holidays. Standard bookings are usually arranged the same day for the next available sailing.
